Nervous About Your First Full Head Sew-In? What to Expect With a Makeup Artist Level Finish

By The Allure Marian Unisex Salon | July 23, 2026

We hear this all the time: you want the look, but you don’t want the stress. And honestly, that’s fair. One of the reasons people stick with our team is consistency. As one client put it, their stylist was “super kind, ” “very talented, ” and “consistent, detailed and cares about your hair.” That’s the energy we keep in the chair.

If you’re nervous because you’ve never done a Full Head Sew-In, you’re normal. A Full Head Sew-In usually takes about 3 to 6 hours. We braid your natural hair into a neat base, then sew the extensions onto the braids for length and volume while keeping your own hair protected from heat and daily styling stress. You’ll leave knowing exactly how to care for it, how it should feel, and when to come back for an adjustment.

First full head sew-in in Brooklyn at The Allure Marian Unisex Salon

Quick reassurance: Expect some scalp tightness for 24 to 72 hours, especially if you’re sensitive. Tell us right away if you want the braids looser. We’d rather adjust in the moment than have you go home uncomfortable.

We’re in Brooklyn in Flatbush / Prospect Lefferts Gardens, so a lot of first-timers pop in after a walk near Prospect Park or make it an easy stop off the 2/5 lines or the B41 along Flatbush Avenue. Since sew-ins take time, plan for it like you’d plan for any long appointment: water bottle, phone charger, and something small to snack on.

Prep for a Full Head Sew-In: 6 things we want you to do before you sit down

The smoothest sew-ins start before you arrive. We do offer services that include washing on some appointments, and clients often mention being taken care of right away and loving the vibes while we work. Still, you’ll get the best braid base when your hair is clean and fully detangled.

  • Wash and condition within 24 to 48 hours if you can. Clean hair grips better for braiding.
  • Detangle all the way through, especially at the nape and crown. If we’re fighting knots, it adds time and tension.
  • Skip heavy oils at the scalp right before your appointment. They can make the braid base slip and feel itchy faster.
  • Bring 2 to 3 reference photos and be ready to say what you like. Think: part placement, length, and curl pattern.
  • Tell us how sensitive your scalp is. If you’ve had braids that felt too tight, say it early. We can adjust the tension.
  • Decide your finish: traditional sew-in with leave out or a closure/front. If you’re not sure, we’ll talk it through before we braid.

Good to know: Our Full Head Sew-In is a protective style. We braid your natural hair and sew extensions onto the braids to add length and volume while helping you avoid daily heat and styling stress.

Inside the 3 to 6 hour Full Head Sew-In appointment: braid base, sew, blend, done

When you arrive, we start with a quick conversation so we’re on the same page about your hair, your goal, and your comfort level. People come to us for a reason. They talk about our stylists being friendly, attentive, and detailed. That matters when you’re sitting for a multi-hour service.

1) Consult and sectioning (10 to 20 minutes)

We’ll look at your density, your part preference, and how you normally wear your hair. If you want minimal leave out, say that. A client recently loved that they left with “a great sew in with minimal leave out, ” and that’s a real conversation we have up front, not a surprise at the end.

2) Braiding your natural hair into a neat base (60 to 120 minutes)

This is where first-timers feel the most nervous because braids can feel snug. Mild tightness is normal. Sharp pain isn’t. If you’re sensitive, tell us and we’ll loosen the braids before we move on. We want a secure base that protects your hair, not something that has you counting down the minutes.

3) Sewing the wefts and setting the shape (60 to 150 minutes)

Once the braid pattern is set, we sew the extensions onto the braids. This is the “okay, I can relax now” part for a lot of people. Clients tell us the vibe is easy, friendly, and comfortable, and yes, we’ve had clients mention we put on a good movie during their appointment.

4) Cutting, blending, and finishing (20 to 45 minutes)

We shape it so it looks like you, not like you’re wearing a helmet of hair. People regularly tell us their sew-in is “flawless, ” that their “curls came out perfectly, ” and that they’re getting compliments after leaving the salon. That’s the goal: a finish that reads polished, the same way a makeup artist finish reads clean and intentional.

“This was my first time visiting this stylist, and Tia was absolutely amazing. Before my appointment, my confidence was at an all-time low and I wasn’t happy with my current look. Tia completely transformed that for me, I’ve never felt so beautiful and confident. The sew-in was flawless, and the curls came out perfectly. I will definitely be coming back.”

A first-time client

Aftercare that keeps your sew-in looking fresh in Brooklyn summer heat

Right after your appointment, your scalp may feel a little tight or tender. That tends to calm down within 24 to 72 hours. If it feels too tight, don’t tough it out. Let us know so we can talk through what you’re feeling and what to adjust next time.

Sleep and friction

Use a silk or satin scarf or bonnet. It keeps the hair smoother and helps you hold the style longer, especially if you’re wearing curls.

Cleansing without soaking your braid base

In July, humidity and sweat are real. We generally recommend cleansing your scalp with a diluted shampoo mix in a spray bottle or applicator, then gently wiping and rinsing. The big thing is drying. Make sure the braided base dries thoroughly after any cleansing or sweat, because staying damp is what starts that “I need this out” feeling.

Oils and product placement

Go light around the braid line. Heavy oils at the base can cause buildup fast. If you’re fighting frizz, use lightweight anti-frizz product on the hair itself, not poured into the braids.

Rebook timing: Most people do best with a check-in or maintenance around 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how active your schedule is.

Flatbush to Midwood tip: bring the charger, ask for the tension check, leave feeling “very pretty”

Here’s the tip a lot of first-timers don’t hear: ask us to do a tension check before we start sewing. Once the wefts are in, it’s harder to correct. We’d rather you speak up early. People come back to us because they feel listened to and they like that we’re consistent and detailed. We also hear the same outcome over and over: “owner and stylists are very friendly” and they “always leave my hair looking very pretty.”

If you’re booking evenings or weekends because life is busy, plan like it’s a mini hangout. Water, charger, and a small snack. Sew-ins take focus, and we want you comfortable the whole time.

We recommend coming in with clean, conditioned hair that’s fully detangled. Skip heavy oils at the scalp right before your appointment, bring 2 to 3 reference photos, and tell us if your scalp is sensitive so we can keep the braid base comfortable.

A sew-in shouldn’t be painful, but it’s normal to feel some tightness or mild soreness, especially for the first 24 to 72 hours. If you’re sensitive, tell us during braiding. We can adjust tension so you leave comfortable.

Most people do best with a check-in or maintenance around 2 to 4 weeks. Timing depends on how fast your hair grows, how active you are, and how you’re caring for your scalp and braid base at home.

Yes. Summer sweat and humidity are common in Brooklyn, so we suggest cleansing your scalp with a diluted shampoo mix (often in a spray bottle or applicator), then making sure the braided base dries thoroughly. Keeping the base damp too long is what usually causes irritation and buildup.

Bring your phone charger, a water bottle, and a small snack since the appointment can run several hours. Reference photos help too, especially for length, part placement, and the finish you want (straight, body wave, curls).
